Dr. Sivakumar Jaikumar joined UNC Healthcare in July 2005. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India, Dr. Jaikumar completed a Master’s in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed his surgical internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and completed his neurosurgery training at Stanford Medical Center. During his training, he completed a one-year fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He obtained board certification through The American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2005.
Since arriving at UNC, Dr. Jaikumar has been an active member of the neurosurgical service. In addition to his general neurosurgery practice, he serves as section chief of spinal neurosurgery and has been a member of the UNC Spine Center since his arrival. He has interests in minimally-invasive spine surgery and in complex spinal reconstruction. He is involved in collaborative work with area physicians to provide excellent spine care to the Triangle community. Dr. Jaikumar has an expressed interest in teaching residents and was awarded the Neurosurgery Teacher of the Year Award in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
