UNC promotes a multidisciplinary team approach in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease. We have a dedicated combined neurologic and neurosurgical intensive care unit staffed by specially trained physicians to provide state-of-the-art care for our most critically ill patients.
Our ICU is equipped with a portable CT scanner to allow for immediate identification of progressive intracerebral hemorrhage or developing edema.
At UNC, we have adopted an open-access policy requiring that we will be able to open a bed for any patient in the state of North Carolina requiring emergent treatment for cerebrovascular disease including spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage from an aneurysm or hypertensive crisis as well as a cerebral infarct. The neurosurgery team follows all patients with intracerebral hemorrhage of any source and those patients with ischemic infarcts that develop malignant intracranial hypertension who may require surgical intervention.
UNC also has a team of dedicated neurointerventional radiologists who work to assist in opening blood vessels acutely blocked by a clot or plaque or securing ruptured intracranial aneurysms.
