UNC Researchers Enroll COVID-19 Vaccine Phase 3 Trial Participants

Led by Cindy Gay, MD, clinical researchers in the UNC Division of Infectious Diseases are leaning on years of experience and expertise to partake in a large phase 3 clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine. Ronald Falk, MD, Chair of the UNC Department of Medicine, is one of the trial’s first participants.

UNC Researchers Create New Type of Accurate COVID-19 Antibody Test

UNC School of Medicine researchers Aravinda de Silva, PhD, and Prem Lakshmanane, PhD, and colleagues developed a COVID-19 test that pinpoints human antibodies specific to a particular part of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The test can be ramped up to document past and recent COVID-19 infections and possibly used to identify asymptomatic virus infection and the level of immunity in individuals.

The lead authors of the study in the journal Cell are UNC-Chapel Hill pulmonary expert Richard Boucher, MD, and virology expert Ralph Baric, PhD.

UNC Researchers Collaborate on Project to Study Pandemic’s Impact on People with Eating Disorders

Cynthia Bulik, PhD, founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders (CEED) is leading a study with Christine Peat, PhD, director of the National Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders (NCEED), to characterize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with eating disorders. Preliminary data from the U.S. and the Netherlands are being published to share with clinicians and caregivers to provide a roadmap forward as the pandemic evolves.

UNC Researcher Leads National Survey on Mental Health Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic

Olafur Palsson, PsyD, professor of medicine in the UNC School of Medicine, led a study investigating the emotional and mental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. The study authors are releasing their findings directly to the public in an effort to provide guidance and understanding to individuals and clinicians as the pandemic evolves.

UNC Begins Plasma Collection for Treating COVID-19 Patients

The UNC Medical Center is now collecting convalescent plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients to help current UNC Health COVID-19 patients, under FDA guidelines. UNC School of Medicine researchers are planning a clinical trial to analyze coronavirus antibody responses in patients who receive convalescent plasma.
