Doula Shift Procedure

  1. Sign in on Volunteer Sign-in Sheet (located in blue Doula Resource Notebook.)
  2. Check with Charge Nurse to get an assignment.
  3. After the birth, complete a Data Collection Sheet
  4. Give mother an evaluation form. This is available in english and spanish. Ask the mother to fill it out and give it to her nurse before leaving the hospital.
  5. Before you leave, sign out your hours in the Volunteer Sign-in Sheet.
  6. If you need parking vouchers, they are located in en envelope in the left inside cover of the blue Doula Resource Notebook. Take one voucher for each hour of parking.
  7. If you need to leave before the birth, phone someone else to come in. (The phone list is located in blue Doula Resource Notebook)
  8. Have fun!
  9. Come tell your birth story at the monthly doula meeting.

There are 4 pieces of paper work for you to handle with each shift:
  1. Sign the date and time in and out
  2. Data Collection Form
  3. Evaluation Form
  4. BirthPartners brochure

Requirements to participate in UNC BirthPartners
  1. Completion of a Doula Training from DONA or another doula-certifying program.
  2. Tour and orientation of UNC labor and delivery unit with Program Manager.
  3. Attend UNC volunteer Hospital Orientation annually and complete requirements for Volunteer Office. Complete annual education requirements, including Age-specific, Fire and Safety trainings and blood borne pathogen training.
  4. Annual Tb test.
  5. Sign confidentiality statement.
  6. If you are a new doula, you may attend your first (more as needed or desired) birth with a mentor.
  7. Discuss first birth experience with Program Manager.

Program Goals
  1. To have 24/7 doula coverage so that:
    • clients can be informed during their prenatal care about the program.
    • physicians can identify clients whom they specifically wish to receive a doula by noting this on the Problem List of the Prenatal record.
  2. To provide continuous, knowledgeable labor support for underserved women birthing at UNCH.
  3. To increase maternal satisfaction of their birth experience of women who deliver at UNC.
  4. To increase partner participation as desired by the laboring woman and her partner.
  5. To increase the success of breastfeeding among those women who choose to breastfeed.

Forms
  • Data Collection Form - This is completed for each woman you care for, even if you are not present for the birth. When complete, leave it in the file labeled "Completed Forms" in the doula area across from Room 12.
  • Evaluation of Labor Support Services (Spanish) - Give to the mother when you leave. Ask her to fill it out and give it to her nurse. Available in English and Spanish.
  • UNC BirthPartners Brochure (Comming soon!) - give to the mother when you first meet her. available in English and Spanish. Located in a file in the doula area across from Room 12.
