Answers to Frequency Asked Questions Who is eligible to receive NIM CDs? As our primary mission and funding are to get nutrition education into U.S. medical schools, the Nutrition in Medicine® (NIM) team will provide five complimentary copies ONLY to medical school instructors teaching medical students. The NIM project identifies and maintains one primary contact per medical school. We encourage instructors to work together within and across schools as we cannot support multiple individuals at each medical school. The individual designated as the "Primary Contact" will be responsible for completing yearly surveys and will receive up to 5 complimentary copies of these programs for use in the curriculum. This person will also receive ongoing educational support, including access to the instructor portion of the web site, a NIM Instructor Support Tools CD, and program development updates! It is the Primary Contact's responsibility to share these programs as necessary with colleagues and/or learning resource centers within their schools. If you are the person with the primary responsibility for nutrition education of medical students, please indicate that on our annual survey. Please keep us informed of any changes in instructor assignments for teaching nutrition at your institution and of any contact information changes. For other individuals and institutions, please contact Medeor Interactive Information at mail@medeorinteractive.com. (See address and phone information below in the next question/answer.) How do I get copies of the modules? If you are the *"Primary Contact" at a medical school teaching medical students, then proceed to ordering. Fill out and submit the order request. *For more information regarding "Primary Contacts", see the above question/answer. For all other individuals and institutions, please contact Medeor Interactive Information at mail@medeorinteractive.com. Medeor Interactive Information What is the cost for purchasing modules? At present, we provide each institution with up to 5 complimentary copies of each title upon request. Additional copies can be purchased through the publisher, Medeor Interactive Information. A LAN version is available if specifically requested. Because of the time involved to create the LAN versions and the ability of the LAN version to reach many students, our policy is to provide each school with one LAN version and one regular version of each title at no cost. It is possible that in the future there may be a charge for the LAN versions. Should I do anything before running the program? Great news! First, check the below system requirements. Second, now all the modules (version 3.7 to 4.1) run the same way, no longer require a log-in or floppy disks, and all contain the Lite Version feature. These new CDs will start up on their own, without any installation to the hard drive. For instructions, see QuickStart. What kind of computer equipment do I need to run these programs? The CD-ROM disks for the Nutrition in Medicine® series operate on PC system computers. The minimum operating requirements are listed below:
Which QuickTime version do I need to use? All NIM® modules use QuickTime. Currently, NIM modules versions 3.7 and higher use QuickTime 3.0 or higher. QuickTime version 5.0 is distributed on NIM CD-ROMs versions 3.7 and higher. *You should uninstall QuickTime 2.1.2 prior to installing QuickTime 5.0. Why can I see graphics on some NIM® modules and not on others? More than likely you are using NIM modules versions 3.0 or lower. We are no longer supporting these older versions. In a recent mailing to medical schools, we sent all primary contacts updated CD-ROMs. If you are a primary contact and/or did not receive this mailing, please contact us for updated CD-ROMs. Will these programs run on laptops? Yes, if the laptop computers have the basic specifications as listed above, there should not be a problem. I can't install NIM versions 3.7 or higher. What am I doing wrong? NIM versions 3.7 and higher do not need to be installed onto your local hard drive. The NIM module will start automatically once the CD in inserted. From the main menu screen, simply click on the module title and the program will start. I've inserted my CD version 3.7 or higer and I didn't get a main menu screen? If you inserted NIM module 3.7 or higher and it doesn't start automatically, you will need to do the following: double-click on the "my computer icon" and then click on the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. The main menu screen should appear now. If this message appears on your screen, it is possible you do not have QuickTime installed (or do not have the right version installed) or you may be using an older version of NIM modules. Check that you have a NIM module(s) version 3.7 or higher. For NIM modules versions 3.7 and higher, use QuickTime 3.0 or higher. QuickTime 5.0 is distributed on the CDs. You should uninstall QuickTime 2.1.2 before installing QuickTime 5.0. I installed Adobe Acrobat 4; however, I still can't view the Handouts. What should I do? Once you install Adobe Acrobat 4, you must open the Acrobat program itself by clicking on Acrobat Reader 4.0 and accept the licensing agreement. Once you do this, you should be able to view the NIM module PDF Handouts from the on-screen main menu selection. Who do I contact if I have any technical questions? Please contact nimtech@unc.edu. What other topics are going to be covered in future modules? The current planned series of ten modules are listed:
Visit the site periodically to get updated information! For what audiences are these programs geared? The original series is designed for first and second year medical students. Plans are underway for developing versions for undergraduate nutrition students, continuing medical education, and other health professions audiences. These versions will be available through Medeor Interactive Information. When will the module series be updated? Great News! See "New Releases". Modules will undergo revisions periodically as new information becomes available and funding sources remain stable. How long does it take to go through a module? On average, it takes approximately 2 1/2 hours for the lesson and 30 minutes for the case section. Time spent depends on the thoroughness of the student. The Lite Version takes approximately half this time. What is the evaluation process? NIM surveys are mailed to medical schools annually. These questionnaires ask instructors about their school's use of the NIM modules and the requirements and scope of nutrition education. Follow-up surveys to active users evaluate educational, technical, and other aspects of the series. We have also collaborated with a number of institutions for formal educational evaluation and published these results (see NIM publications). We plan to continue these evaluation efforts; if you are interested in collaborating with us in an evaluation process, please contact us. In what ways are medical schools using NIM CDs? In our special survey of active NIM users conducted in early 2001, twenty-seven out of thirty-seven schools responding to this question stated that the CDs supplement the course material. Several schools (n=14) use the CDs to replace a lecture or course on that topic. Several other schools (n=6) use the CDs in different ways, such as independent study or small group discussion. Three schools have an entire course devoted to the CDs. The CD crashed: What can I do? Occasionally a computer's memory will become so full that certain items do not display, or images overlap text, or the program fails to respond. Usually this only happens if you go through the entire module, or the majority of the module, in one sitting. Quitting and restarting the program should allow users to continue the CD program. As a preventive measure, you may wish to quit the program halfway through, and re-enter before completing the module. When students are using the exams at the end of the CD module for a grade, we strongly suggest that they quit and re-enter before taking the exam. |
