Answers to Frequency Asked Questions for Instructors

What is the Instructor Support Tools CD-ROM and how can its components be used?

The Instructor Support Tools CD-ROM is part of the NIM series and contains valuable information and support tools for instructors. You will find information on:

  1. the Instructor Modules, including creating a Lite Version and notes for your students
  2. transferring instructor-generated files to student computers
  3. changing the student data recording preference
  4. creating floppy AccessDisks
  5. analyzing student scores and other data
  6. linking to the NIM website
  7. and installing Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4

For a brief description on how the Instructor Support Tools CD-ROMs' components can be used, go to Instructor Support Tools Manual.

What is in the Instructor Support Tools Manual?

The Instructor Support Tools Manual gives documentation on valuable information and support tools for instructor found in the Instructor Support Tools CD-ROM. You will find information on:

  1. the Instructor Modules, including creating a Lite Version and notes for your students
  2. transferring instructor-generated files to student computers
  3. changing the student data recording preference
  4. creating floppy AccessDisks
  5. analyzing student scores and other data
  6. linking to the NIM website
  7. and installing Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4

Can I network the programs over a server?

Versions 3.71 and above are not designed to run on a Local Area Network (LAN); if you wish to run a module over a LAN you'll need to specifically request a "LAN version" from us. This LAN version will install everything automatically; whether it as able to be networked will depend on your setting. Be aware that the video patient case simulation may exhibit significant quality degradation with more than a few simultaneous users. Unfortunately, the Nutrition in Medicine team at UNC is unable to offer networking technical support, as this often has to be individualized. If you need extensive technical support for delivery on a server, our publisher Medeor Interactive Information, does provide a site license that includes this level of support. Contact Medeor Interactive Information at mail@medeorinteractive.com.

Will the LAN version run on a single user computer?

No. This version is specifically designed for use on a local area network (LAN). It will not run on a single user computer.

Does the content of the exam questions adjust accordingly from the Full Version to the Lite Version?

No. Each module contains exam questions that reflect the content of the full version. If you elect the Default Lite Version or create a Custom Lite Version, your students may not be able to answer questions on material that was omitted in these versions (i.e. the exam content does not adjust accordingly).

I want to record student scores. What do I need to do?

To record student scores from the Board Exams, you will need the "Recording Preference" utility. This utility can be found on the Instructor Support Tools CD-ROM.

The Student Module automatically keeps a record of the student's activities while the program is running. What happens to this information when the student exits the program is up to you. There are three different options of what can happen to this data record:

  1. Records are saved to the local hard drive (default option)
  2. Records are saved to a floppy AccessDisk for later analysis
  3. No record is maintained upon exit

The recording preference data file is NOT included in the list of files moved by the Transfer Tool utility for security and data-integrity reasons. If the recording preference must be changed from the default setting to meet the needs of your class or situation, you must change it on EACH student computer or shared workstation. Please refer to the Instructor Support Tools Manual for detailed instructions..

What is the password for the Student Modules?

A pre-assigned password for students does NOT exist. The username and password for students is individually set. For example: if the student's name is "Jane Smith" and her student ID number is "0368". Then her username would be "JSmith" and her password would be "0368".

*Ask your students to use a "username" and "password" they will remember. Using their name and student ID is helpful to them because it is information they know and it is helpful to you in identifying the student when grading.

What is the Data Analyzer?

The Data Analyzer is used to track the amount of time a student spends using the program, the grades they get on the NIM Module Board Exams, and/or calculate the group mean data of an entire class. Use the Data Analyzer to manage the data records for your students and print out the analysis results.

*Floppy AccessDisks are required to use the Data Analyzer. For more information on AccessDisks, see "Create AccessDisks in the manual".

How do I recover lost student IDs and names?

Email us for this information.

What is the Lite Version Image Booklet (LVIB)?

The Lite Version Image Booklet is designed to aid instructors in creating a Custom Lite Version or identifying topics that are included in the Default Lite Version. Each booklet contains thumbnail images and descritions of the screens from the matching Student Module CD-ROM. The thumbnail images are helpful in identifying content and for making your selections during Lite Version Creation. The LVIB are in Adobe Acrobat Reader format, otherwise known as PDF. You must have Acrobat Reader installed to view and print the LVIB.

Can I use older and newer modules on the same computer?

Not recommended. The most current NIM modules are versions 3.7 and higher. Support is no longer being offered for NIM versions earlier than 3.5, and it is recommended that anyone using a version prior to 3.5 upgrade to prevent compatibility problems. Substantial changes have been made to the NIM software over the years, especially in the login and record keeping areas. Some issues to keep in mind:

  1. NIM software versions prior to 2.5 required a floppy AccessDisk by default. Newer versions do not require an AccessDisk by default, but may be configured to use one.
  2. Media formats changes in versions 3.5 and 3.7 to improve the user experience. Also read the Apple QuickTime note below for information about a related topic.
  3. Prior to version 3.5, NIM software had to be fully installed on the local machine. Software versions 3.7 and higher run directly from the CD and only load record-keeping files as needed.
  4. The latest versions of the software may contain important content updates that reflect new research or recommendations.

Of special note is Apple's QuickTime (QT). Apple has dramatically changed QT with each upgrade making some newer versions of QT perform poorly when installed on the same computer alongside older QT versions. For instance, there are some incompatibilities between QT version 2.1.2 and version 5 that have produces poor quality video in tests and have prevented uninstalls of one or the other version. It is recommended that you uninstall any older version of QT prior to installing version 5 or higher.

Older versions of the NIM software used QT 2.1.2 while the newest versions use QT 5. In an effort to prevent NIM's users from encountering this incompatibility, support is being discontinued for NIM products using QT 2.1.2 and any users of these products are requested to upgrade.

I installed Adobe Acrobat 4; however, I still can't view the Handouts. What should I do?

Once you install Adobe Acrobat 4, you must open the Acrobat program itself by clicking on Acrobat Reader 4.0 and accept the licensing agreement. Once you do this, you should be able to view the NIM module PDF Handouts from the on-screen main menu selection.
