UNC Midwives serve women throughout their lives from teen to mature women. We provide a wide range of services including first gynecological exams, obstetrical care, labor and delivery, contraception, perimenopause and women's preventative health care. We place importance on teaching and counseling and working together with women and their families in designing the best birth plan for pregnant women and the best health care plan for all women. Certified Nurse-Midwives are an alternative to physician care, not a substitute. Midwives partner with women of all ages in their health care. UNC midwives place importance on prenatal teaching and counseling. Midwives work together with the birthing woman and her family in the delivery of the baby at UNC Women's Hospital. Midwives also work with the attending obstetricians if their patients require physician consultation. Along with ordering medication and epidurals for their patients, Certified Nurse-Midwives utilize their expertise in alternative and complimentary therapies, such as aroma-therapy and massage.
