STUDY BRIEF | The LIFE study is a trial for women experiencing symptoms for Fecal Incontinence (FI). This study is evaluating the use of the investigational LivSure vaginal insert for the control of FI. The insert is non-surgical and does not contain drugs or hormones. It resides in a similar position as a diaphragm or tampon and can be removed by the patient at any time. While in the vagina, the device supports the rectum in a way that may control bowel leakage.

Jennifer Wu, MD, MPH will join UNC Pelvic Health on April 22, 2013

Dr. Wu is an Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Director of Research in the Division of Urogynecology. She earned her BA in Biology from Harvard University and her MD from the University of California at San Francisco. She trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital & Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA and then completed a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Concurrently, she completed the NIH T32 Triangle Clinical Research Fellowship in Reproductive Health and received her Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology at the UNC School of Public Health. After graduating from fellowship in 2007, she served on the faculty at Duke University until 2013, when she decided to rejoin the UNC Chapel Hill Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

She is a former Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K12 scholar and is now supported by a NICHD K23 to evaluate the genetic epidemiology of pelvic floor disorders. She has been NIH-funded to evaluate the genetic etiology of prolapse as well as to study the pharmacogenetic predictors of the response to anticholinergic medications for overactive bladder. Her long-term career goal is to substantially improve women’s health in the field of urogynecology by becoming a well-trained, independent clinician-scientist able to use innovative tools to identify the root causes of pelvic floor disorders and to translate these findings into improved clinical practice.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Wu back to UNC" shares Dr. Catherine Matthews, Director of UNC Pelvic Health. "In addition to her broad clinical excellence in the treatment of all pelvic floor disorders, she is a gifted researcher who brings her results back to the bedside. For example, Dr Wu will be collecting a biorepository so individual genetic information can be used to direct patient treatment. While we feel honored to have her, I know that our patients will be the more fortunate recipients of her expertise."

NEW RESEARCH | Risk Factors for Fecal Incontinence in Older Women

Recent research about the risk factors associated with fecal incontinence.

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of fecal incontinence (FI) in older women and examine associations between potential risk factors and prevalent FI.

METHODS:

We conducted a cross-sectional study of prevalent FI in 64,559 women, aged 62 – 87 years, in the Nurses’ Health Study. Since 1976, participants provided information on health and lifestyle on mailed biennial questionnaires. Data on FI were collected in 2008. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for FI were calculated using logistic regression models.

RESULTS:

The reported prevalence of liquid or solid stool incontinence at least monthly increased from 9% in women aged 62 to 64 years to 17 % in women aged 85 to 87 years. Prevalent FI was 50 % less common in black women compared with white women (6 % vs. 12 % , respectively). Other variables associated with increased odds of FI at least monthly were pregnancy, higher body mass index (BMI), lower physical activity, functional limitations, current cigarette smoking, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and neurologic disease. Urinary incontinence (UI) was a strong correlate of FI, with 63 % of women with FI reporting UI at least monthly compared with 45 % of women in the whole study population.
