Education and Outreach

Women who are struggling with substance use often need the assistance of other agencies in the community. We very much want those community people to be compassionate and helpful to our clients. Horizons’ mission includes offering training and education to service providers and the general public through workshops, conferences, newsletters, posters and brochures, community involvement, and student internships and volunteer opportunities.

Educational Topics include:

Basics of Substance Abuse
Gender Specific Trauma-InformedTreatment
Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence
Perinatal Substance Abuse Treatment
Parenting Issues for Women Struggling with Substance Use.

Horizons also sponsors an Annual Conference on Women and Addiction each spring at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. We publish a quarterly newsletter for service providers. Please see archive for past issues. Horizons staff welcome any opportunities to present information to interested audiences.

Horizons serves as a placement site for undergraduate and graduate student interns at area universities in the fields of social work, education, public health, psychology, women’s studies, nursing and medicine.
