Horizons Residential Programs

Horizons has two residential programs  (Sunrise and Daybreak) located in Chapel Hill that can serve up to 25 families (pregnant women and/or mothers with up to 3 children under age 12).  Each program focuses on three main goals:

1. self-care and recovery from substance use and from trauma
2. education/employment  and self-sufficiency
3. care and parenting of the children

The residential program lasts one year.  During that time, each mother is expected to graduate with:

• 1 year clean and sober
• a relapse prevention plan
• a network of support
• full-time permanent employment with benefits
• safe housing
• transportation by car or bus
• savings account, and budgeting skills
• a sponsor and NA/AA home group
• an awareness of her children’s strengths and any special needs they may have

• educational advancement-GED certificates of special skills-and computer skills

• tools for self-care

While in residence, each family lives in a rent-free apartment at a local apartment complex.  At Sunrise, 8 of the apartments are reserved for families on Work First, 2 are for families with other income, such as child support or a child disability, and 6 are for pregnant or postpartum women and their children.  Daybreak has 6 apartments with the capacity for 9 pregnant women and/or mothers and their children.

The mothers attend full time programming, including the outpatient SACOT program.

By the sixth month, mothers are encouraged to get their GED and/or obtain training or other education to increase their job prospects. All the mothers try to find employment for the last few months and save money until graduation.

Children in the families age 0-5 attend our on-site 5 star licensed Child Care Center or a child care center in the community.  Older children attend the Chapel Hill schools.

Families continue to receive services from Horizons for at least six months after discharge.
