Dr. Wesley "Butch" Fowler is a true Tar Heel. He received his B.S. in math from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed medical school and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. After completing his training, he spent two years in the military stationed at William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas.

In 1973 he returned to Chapel Hill and joined the faculty in the Department of OB-GYN as a gynecologic oncologist. In 1975 he started the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. He served as director of the division until June 2009. He was Vice Chair of the department from 1983-2009 and director of the resident program from 1983-1997.

On a national level he has served as director of the American Board of OB-GYN , Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology of the American Board of OB-GYN, president of Excellence Foundation of the American Board of OB-GYN, president of the Foundation for Women's Cancers, president of the Society for Gynecologic Oncology, and head of the resident review committee at UNC OB-GYN.

His major interests are the care of women with cancer and resident and fellow education. He currently serves as associate dean for medical alumni affairs at the UNC School of Medicine, and he no longer performs surgery.
