Katrina Avery, '91 (M.D., OB/GYN) is a firm believer in community service, nurturing young minds and showing, through her own actions, the importance of giving back.

Avery and her husband Elbert established the Howard-Avery Loyalty Fund Scholarship in 2005 in the UNC School of Medicine as a way to acknowledge the encouragement they both received from their families to further their education as well as to support future physicians.

There have been eight Howard-Avery scholars to date and Dr. Avery stills stays in touch with the majority of them.

"It is rewarding to see scholars accomplish goals in medical school and move forward knowing that I had a small part in it," Avery said. "I hope they will see what we've done and reach back and help someone else."

One of those beneficiaries is Rachel Adams '14 (M.D.) Adams is a two-time Howard-Avery scholar, currently in residency and training with UNC's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
