Ten residency programs at the University of North Carolina Hospitals were each named among the top residencies in the South in rankings released this week by Doximity and U.S. News & World Report.

UNC Hospitals’ residency in obstetrics and gynecology was ranked No. 1 of 11 programs that were included.

“This recognition by Doximity affirms our department’s ‘culture’ and dedication to education,” said Daniel Clarke-Pearson, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology. “We are fortunate to be able to recruit excellent residents who are eager learners.”

UNC’s family medicine residency was ranked No. 2, otolaryngology was ranked No. 3 and psychiatry was ranked No. 3. Other UNC Hospitals residencies included were internal medicine (No. 8), urology (No. 5), surgery (No. 6), pediatrics(No. 5), orthopaedic surgery (No. 7) and anesthesiology (No. 8).

“We are extremely proud that so many of our residency programs stand out among their national peers,” said Clark R. Denniston, MD, executive associate dean for graduate medical education in the UNC School of Medicine.

The rankings were calculated based on evaluations from more than 50,000 board-certified U.S. physicians, who evaluated 3,691 residency training programs nationwide across 20 specialties.

Doximity is an online professional network for U.S. physicians launched in 2011. Physicians who are registered with Doximity are eligible to vote for the residency rankings and for U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals rankings.
