UNC Family Planning Fellow Dr. Jonas Swartz wins 2017 Pitkin Award

The Roy M. Pitkin Award award was established in 1998 to honor departments of obstetrics and gynecology that promote and demonstrate excellence in research.

Dr. Jonas Swartz, a fellow in the UNC Division of Family Planning, has been awarded the 2017 Roy M. Pitkin Award from Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The award was established in 1998 to honor departments of obstetrics and gynecology that promote and demonstrate excellence in research.

Dr. Swartz is recognized for his article, "Expanding Prenatal Care to Unauthorized Immigrant Women and the Effects on Infant Health," which appeared in the journal in 2017. He published the article based on research completed at Oregon Health and Science University, where he spent his residency and one year on faculty before coming to UNC OB-GYN for his fellowship.

His research showed that increased access to prenatal care for unauthorized and low-income, legal resident immigrant women leads to better health outcomes for these women and their children.

An announcement of the award will appear in the May 2018 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
