The Division of Women's Primary Healthcare offers general obstetric and gynecologic services including full screening and preventive care of adult women across the life-span (adolescence, pregnancy, the reproductive years, as well as menopause and the older woman). In addition, our obstetricians and gynecologists try to educate women on how maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Are you currently pregnant or are planning a pregnancy?
Our Department not only offers high risk pregnancy management within our Maternal-Fetal Division, but both the Women's Primary Healthcare and Nurse Midwifery Division can help you from the planning of your pregnancy, to delivery and beyond. Additionally, our Department is conducting a study focusing on factors affecting fertility called Time to Conceive.
Do you need assistance conceiving or wish to preserve fertility?
The Department of OB/GYN's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility provides care for both male and female infertility. In addition to a successful fertility program,we also offer fertility preservation. The UNC's Fertility Preservation Program is designed to provide state-of-the-art options for reproductive-aged men or women who are about to begin treatments that may threaten their chance for future child-bearing.
Do you suspect or have you been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer?
Our Division of Gynecologic Oncology specializes in the treatment and prevention of gynecological cancers. This includes surgical treatment as well as radiation treatment and chemotherapy. In addition, we also offer education and diagnostic treatment for patients with early invasive disease.
Do you have difficulty with bladder or bowl control, incontinence, prolapse or pelvic floor weakness?
Many women suffer from problems involving the pelvic floor structures, including the bladder, genital tract, lower gastrointestinal tract and pelvic floor muscles. Often these problems result from injury to the pelvic floor with childbirth, physical stress or injury, chronic disease or prior surgery. Women may also experience leakage of urine while coughing, laughing, lifting or exercising. Or, they may leak with a sudden uncontrollable urge. These symptoms can be both annoying and embarrassing. The good news is that treatment options are available. The team of urogynecologists from UNC are leaders in the field, with a 3 year fellowship program approved by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Board of Urology. They specialize in the evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence, bladder dysfunction, vaginal or uterine prolapse, fecal incontinence and complex gynecologic conditions such as fistulas or complications from surgery.
Through the use of advanced diagnostics such as urodynamics, cystoscopy and ultrasound, the UNC specialists can pinpoint the cause of the problem and develop solutions. UNC specialists offer many nonsurgical therapies, including biofeedback for pelvic floor muscle retraining and strengthening, diet and behavior modification, medications, pessaries and posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). UNC specialists also offer a range of surgical procedures based on the exact nature of the dysfunction. These include minimally invasive techniques such as the midurethral slings, urethral bulking agents, Botox injections and Interstim neuromodulation. They also have expertise with advanced technology, such as the DaVinci robot, and a wide experience with vaginal or abdominal approaches for the repair of all types of prolapse, incontinence and pelvic floor conditions.
Do you suffer from chronic pelvic pain that hasn't been identified or treated?
While most of our divisions perform gynecology surgeries both in operative laparoscopy, the Division of Advanced Laparoscopy and Pelvic Pain's typical patients are those with chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, and other general gynecologic problems.
