The Assessment and Item Management System (AIMS) was first developed in the mid 1980's at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine by the Office of Educational Development. AIMS is a comprehensive assessment and item analysis system that can be used by teaching faculty to improve the quality of their questions and easily manage the testing process. AIMS is accessible on the desktop via a secure network, and is available to all course directors of the School of Medicine.

AIMS provides faculty with the ability to:

  • build a bank of questions that can be used in different tests
  • organize content by organ system, course, integrated courses, or keywords
  • link multiple questions to images and narratives
  • build tests by content categories or item performance
  • link questions to course objectives
  • use test statistics to monitor question performance over time
  • create web-based self assessments for students
  • create computer-based exams (under development)
  • provide electronic feedback to students about their performance
  • report scores to the medical school registrar electronically

Support for the AIMS system is provided through the Office of Educational Development. If you would like more information about AIMS please contact:
