Administering Tests

Printed Tests

Course directors who use AIMS can quickly produce a copy-ready, printed test from the AIMS system. Medical Sciences Teaching Labs (MSTL) is responsible for copying and distributing printed exams and Scantron sheets prior to the scheduled time of the exam. For information about copyright policies and exam processing, please refer to the First & Second Year Exam Production & Scoring Guidelines.

Computer-based Tests

The Office of Educational Development (OED) received funding to design and implement a web-based application that can deliver online examinations to medical students on their personal laptops. The application has a password & verification process that prevents unregistered students from logging into any exam. The interface for secured tests also prevents students from accessing external computer and internet resources during a high-stakes exam. Check this web site for more information about the AIMS Online Testing Component.

Proctoring Exams

Course director(s) are responsible for making decisions about monitoring or proctoring their exams. The following resources provide more information about exam proctoring and honor code policies:

Scoring Exams

The AIMS Coordinator is responsible for scoring all exams that have been created in AIMS. Exams that are not developed in AIMS are scored in MSTL (see First & Second Year Exam Production & Scoring Guidelines).

Grade Reporting

After each exam the AIMS Coordinator provides course directors with detailed reports that include students' scores in rank order, class mean & standard deviation, distribution of scores, and performance statistics on each question (see page on Using Performance Data). After course directors review and finalize these reports, students' scores are reported electronically to the Assistant Registrar.

Although AIMS provides information about students' performance on a given exam, it is not a grade reporting system. The recording and reporting of medical school grades is the responsibility of the Assistant Registrar in the Office of Student Affairs. The Assistant Registrar posts all exam and course grades in Berryhill Hall and on the school's web site.

Posting Exams

Historically most course directors have not allowed students to keep copies of exams. However some course directors do post exams and answers in a secure cabinet in Berryhill Hall for a brief period of time.

Giving Feedback

At the time of grade posting, AIMS sends each student an individualized feedback report by email. For more information about the feedback process, please refer to the section on Giving Feedback to Students.
