Giving Feedback to Students
Feedback provides students with information about how well they perform on an exam or assignment, what their performance is relative to the class, and whether they have mastered course content. Students use feedback to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in specific content areas, and make decisions about what areas need further study.
The AIMS system sends performance profiles to students following each exam. The performance profile includes the class mean and standard deviation, the student's performance relative to the class, the content categories of the questions, and the items missed (see sample profile below). Shortly after the exam, the feedback is sent individually to students through an automated email system. Course directors have access to performance profiles for each of their students.

Another means of providing feedback is through self-assessments. Once course directors accumulate a data bank of questions in the AIMS system, they can 'release' a number of items for study purposes. AIMS automatically creates a web page that can be delivered to students on the school's web site. Students who take self-assessments online receive immediate feedback on their performance, including their scores and justifications for correct answers.
