Lipases are responsible for the breakdown of lipids. Patients with inactive lipases show severe hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis due to lipid accumulation. The three mammalian dimeric lipases are dependent on the maturation factor LMF1 for secretion from the endoplasmic reticulum as well as enzymatic activity. I use techniques that explore protein-protein interactions and activity assays to elucidate how dimeric lipases interact with LMF1 as well as the mechanism of lipase maturation.
