Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important emerging opportunistic Gram-negative bacterium causing urinary tract infections, liver abscesses, and pneumonia; mortality rates are between 25% and 60%. Our lab uses a mouse model system that successfully recapitulates human infection by establishing bacterial colonization of the respiratory tract followed by the development of a systemic infection. Furthermore, our lab uses a variety of recombinant DNA technologies to identify and characterize mechanisms relating to virulence. I have also set up a collaboration with the Cairns/Maile Lab to merge our pneumonic infection model with their burn model to study host response to burn and pulmonary infection.
