The primary function of the Office of Global Health Education is to develop programmatic structure and support for UNC medical students and resident physicians interested in global health. The Office of Global Health Education assistance includes site identification or screening, faculty advising, safety and travel policies, ethics and cross-cultural training, post-trip debriefing, and evacuation insurance, among other critical areas of support.

Since our inception in 2008, the Office of Global Health Education has provided support for a wide range of experiences. Residents have developed strong collaborative surgical pediatric research in many global regions. Students have gathered reproductive health data at UNC Project-Malawi in Lilongwe; worked in a small clinic in Tanzania shadowing local doctors and assisting with lab procedures in minor surgery; and traveled and worked in northern India with a team of medical students and faculty.

The Office of Global Health Education is under the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases and seeks to foster collaboration and cooperation with broader initiatives in global health and education at UNC, including the Office of Global Health in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC Global, and the UNC Center for Global Initiatives.
