EVENT DETAILS
Documentary Overview
“Living in Emergency” is set in war-torn Congo and post-conflict Liberia. With unprecedented access to the field operations of Doctors Without Borders, the documentary interweaves the stories of four doctors as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions. Two volunteers are new recruits: a 26-year-old Australian doctor stranded in a remote bush clinic and an American surgeon from Tennessee trying to cope under the load of emergency cases in a shattered capital city. Two others are experienced field hands: a dynamic Head of Mission, valiantly trying to keep morale high and tensions under control, and an exhausted veteran, who has seen too much horror and wants out. Amid the chaos, each doctor must find their own way to face the challenges of the work, the tough choices, and the limits of their idealism
Town Hall Discussion Overview
Elizabeth Vargas will moderate a probing town hall discussion in an effort to go beyond the headlines of today’s humanitarian crises and get an inside look at the operations of Doctors Without Borders. She will delve into the passions, principles, and perseverance driving Dr.Krueger who has worked in Liberia, Darfur, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka and Dr. Brasher who dedicated nine consecutive years to Doctors Without Borders in many crises from malnutrition, war and civil conflict to TB, AIDS, and malaria; war correspondent Sebastian Junger about his reporting from the conflict zones of Afghanistan, Bosnia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; and Sophie Delaunay, executive director of Doctors Without Borders, who has worked for the organization for over 12 years and has recently returned from Pakistan.
Higher Stakes. Tougher Choices. Medicine Like You've Never Seen It.
