Nicaragua Medical Spanish/Global Health courses

The International Studies & Programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, along with selected faculty from the Universidad Cristiana Autonoma de Nicaragua, is accepting applications for UNMC's Medical Spanish/Global Health Courses in Nicaragua for the following sessions: January 30-February 27, 2011; April 3-May 1, 2011; May 29-June 26, 2011; July 3-31, 2011. There is no official deadline to apply for the course, but we will limit the maximum number of participants to 12 per course. Minimum number of course participants is four. The course is open to all health/medical students and professionals.

This is an immersion Spanish language study with onsite exposure to primary and community health care in an underdeveloped country. The course will provide one-on-one instruction in the Spanish language, using the facilities of a Spanish language school in Leon, Nicaragua. Participants will study Spanish language grammar and structure and practice conversation. Due to the individualized nature of the instruction, students at any level of Spanish language knowledge can participate. Students will learn about the delivery of health care in Nicaragua through field trips, visiting Nicaraguan health care facilities, and interaction with Nicaraguan health care professionals. The last week of the course offers hands-on experience at local health facilities in the department of Carazo.

*Nicaraguan family homestay

Housing: Homestay with Nicaraguan family

Costs: $2,200 covers most everything besides airfare, meals during the weekends and field trips, personal expenses and some miscellaneous costs
