WHO Launches Global Burn Registry
The WHO launched the first global platform to standardize data collection from burn victims—welcome news for efforts to advance burn treatment and prevention priorities.
The vast majority of the ~180,000 deaths per year attributed to burns—many entirely preventable—occur in low- and middle-income countries. But weak data collection surrounding burns, as journalist Joanne Silberner documented in her reporting in Nepal for GHN, contributed to the sense that it wasn’t a global priority. More evidence, advocates hope, can lead to more funding and better understanding of major risk factors.
The Global Burn Registry is based on a short data collection form tested extensively in 60 health facilities across 30 countries.
