Program Overview
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill accepts a limited number of foreign medical students into clinical electives during each academic year for what we hope is an educational, engaging, challenging, and positive segment of your medical education. You must be in your final year of medical school when you arrive at UNC for your elective. Electives are each approximately four-weeks in duration, and students may take more than one if they choose and if they perform satisfactorily in their initial elective. Applications are accepted year round. Most students complete electives at UNC Chapel Hill, but we also have electives available at affiliated hospitals throughout North Carolina in cities such as Charlotte, Raleigh, and Wilmington.
Our office is dedicated to guiding you through the application process, assisting you with the logistics involved in completing an international elective, and serving as a helpful resource during your stay in Chapel Hill. We understand that your final year of medical school is a very busy year, and we want to make planning your elective at UNC as easy as possible.
