In 2008, the OIG and Student Health Action Coalition created the SHAC-Ophthalmology Clinic (SHAC-OC) that offers free basic ophthalmologic screenings the first Wednesday of each month.
Medical students are encouraged to contact the SHAC-OC to find out more about participating. Volunteering at the SHAC OC will provide medical students excellent opportunities to practice the eye exam, interact and learn from UNC Ophthalmology faculty and residents, as well as serve the local community.
Training sessions to familiarize medical students with ophthalmic equipment and eye exams occur each fall.
