Running a virus scan using Norton/Symantec Antivirus:

Before running a virus scan on your computer, you must first make sure your virus definitions are up to date. Refer to the following publication if you need help updating your virus definitions:

How do I update my Norton/Symantec Antivirus?

Open Norton/Symantec Antivirus by clicking on the yellow shield located in the bottom right hand corner of your screen (shown below).

Please note: If there is a red circle or an exclamation point on your shield, there is a problem with your Norton or Symantec Antivirus. Please contact OIS Client Services at 919-966-1325 for more information.

You can also open Norton/Symantec by clicking on the Start Menu, selecting Programs. Depending on the version you have installed, look for either a Norton Antivirus or Symantec Client Security folder. Then click on the Norton or the Symantec Program icon.

From the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition window, select double click on Scan from the navigation pane, then select Scan Computer.

From the Scan Computer window, select the drives you would like to scan, and click on the Scan button. The default drive letter for the hard drive is C. If you are scanning a University CCI machine, or a machine with multiple partitions, you will have to select those drives for scanning as well.

Depending on the size of the hard drive being scanned, the scan may take from 30 minutes to an hour.

Please note: Should Norton/Symantec find a virus, a notification will be displayed on your screen. Please contact OIS Client Services at 919-966-1325 if you receive a virus notification.

Scheduling Automatic Virus Scans:

From the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition window, select Scheduled Scans from the navigation pane and click on New Scheduled Scan. Under Name, type the name you would like to use to refer to the new scheduled scan, then click on the Next button.

Create a schedule for your new scan and click on the Next button. OIS recommends running virus scans weekly. Depending on the size of the hard drive being scanned, the scan may take from 30 minutes to an hour, so plan accordingly.

Please note: Should you need to disable the scheduled scan at a later date, navigate to this window and uncheck the Enable Scan box.

Select the drives you would like to scan and click Save. The default drive letter for the hard drive is C. If you are scanning a University CCI machine, or a machine with multiple partitions, you will have to select those drives for scanning as well.

To make changes to your scheduled scan, choose the scan from the Navigation pane and click edit.
