When sending from your SOM email account on campus, you use the School of Medicine SMTP (outgoing mail) server to send mail. When sending email from home, you use your Internet Service Provider's SMTP server.

If you are using a laptop and use the same email program to read, receive and send mail from campus and home, you must change your SMTP server each time you change location of your laptop. You can configure your email client to switch SMTP servers by using a program called Autoroute SMTP.

Download Autoroute SMTP

After downloading the installer file to your desktop, double click on the file to launch the Autoroute installation package. Read and accept the license agreement, then click on Next to continue.

Click on Next to proceed through the Readme information.

Accept the default Destination Directory by clicking on Start.

Once the installation is complete, click OK.

Please note: If a command window remains open (shown below) after you complete the installation, click on the window and press any key to close it.

Please note: After installing Autoroute SMTP, you must configure your email client to use localhost as the SMTP server (do not designate a port). Instructions for configuring Outlook Express and Mozilla are shown below.

Configuring Autoroute SMTP to automatically detect SMTP servers:

Based on the network you are connected to (i.e.. school or home), Autoroute can use your IP information to automatically select the appropriate SMTP server for your location. To configure Autoroute for automatic SMTP discovery, locate the Autoroute icon in your System Tray ( bottom right portion of screen). Right click on the icon to open the configuration Menu, and click on Settings.

In the Program Settings Window, under the General Tab, uncheck the boxes next to "Use first SMTP server in list as default," "Don't resolve addresses within LAN...," and "Don't resolve addresses when no dial-up connection."

Autoroute is now configured for automatic SMTP discovery.

Adding SMTP servers to Autoroute SMTP:

Right click on the Autoroute icon in your System Tray ( bottom right portion of screen), and select Settings from the menu. To add SMTP servers to Autoroute, click on the SMTP Servers tab from the Program Settings window. Click on the dotted line box to add new server information.

Manually changing SMTP server using Autoroute SMTP:

While Autoroute automatically selects SMTP servers based on your connection, there are times when you may want to use another SMTP server. To manually select an SMTP server for sending mail, click on the Autoroute icon in your System Tray ( bottom right portion of screen). Click on Next until you find the SMTP server you would like to use to send mail. Then click OK.

Configuring Mozilla to use Autoroute SMTP:

To configure Mozilla to use Autoroute SMTP, log into the Mozilla email client. From the Menu bar, select Edit, then Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the Settings pane. For Server Name, type localhost. Click on OK and restart Mozilla for the changes to take effect.
