My organization needs a new website.  How is that achieved?

The School of Medicine maintains a content management system: a web-based system for maintaining sites without the need for external publishing software like Adobe Dreamweaver. Any organization within the school (department, center, program, office, lab, or student org) can have one of these sites and receive training at no charge, by contacting the Office of Information Systems at webhelp@med.unc.edu, or calling 966-3519. Though there’s a standardized design, you have customization options, including color palette choices and a free professionally designed homepage graphic. Visit http://www.med.unc.edu/webguide for more information.

OIS offers web and multimedia support. Larger requests and projects are generally available on a fee-for-service basis. Contact OIS at webhelp@med.unc.edu for availability.

I need to edit my departmental website.  How do I gain access?

Standardized sites

You need to contact the site manager(s) of a given site, who're directly responsible for granting access to others. Call 966-3519 or email webhelp@med.unc.edu for help with contact information.

Older sites outside of the web system

  1. Have your Department Chair send an email to OIS Client Services at help@med.unc.edu giving you permission to have access to your departmental web site.
  2. You need to make sure you have a UNIX account.  You can contact OIS Client Services at help@med.unc.edu or 966-1325 to determine whether you have one.
  • If you already have a UNIX account, then OIS will give you access to the departmental web space as soon as the permission email is received.
  • If you do not have a UNIX account, then you will need to go to OIS Client Services in MacNider Hall, Room 65 (M-F 9am-4pm). They will help you fill out an application for a UNIX account.  In about 3-5 days you will receive a letter stating that your UNIX account was created. Once it's created and OIS has received your permission email, then you will be given access to the web space.
  • Once access to the web space is granted, you may access your web site using FTP. OIS Client Services will contact you with the appropriate settings.

How do I find my department's directory on the non-standardized web server?

If you have a UNIX account and the appropriate permissions (including permission of your department chair), contact OIS Client Services at help@med.unc.edu or 966-1325 for the necessary FTP Remote Host settings.

How much space does my department get?

    Standardized sites

For sites within the School of Medicine's content management system, there is currently no limit.

Older sites outside of the web system

For web pages and data outside of the School of Medicine web system, each department gets 30MB of space (excluding videos, which can be hosted on a separate video server). Additional disk space can be purchased for a monthly charge of $4 per 20 MB. Contact the Office of Information Systems (966-9900) for more information.

How much space do I get for personal use?

The university (main campus) provides each faculty, staff member, and graduate student with 250MB of personal web space.  We can't provide individual support for creating and maintaining content in your personal space, but you can find helpful information here: http://help.unc.edu/108

What do I need to create web pages?

    Standardized sites

The SOM web system features a browser-based interface for creating and editing content, as well as uploading images and other files.  No other programs are needed, except for those used to edit media such as images, video, or sound.

Sites outside of the web system

In the past it was necessary to hand-code web pages in HTML with a text editor. Now there are WYSIWIG programs like Adobe Dreamweaver, that write the code for you as you design using a graphic interface.

How do I transfer files from my computer to the non-standardized web server?

For sites outside of the web system, you need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) application like Secure Shell (SSH). You can download this shareware application from the university software downloads page: http://software.unc.edu

Can I incorporate a database backend with my web site?

At this time there is no support for individuals to incorporate databases into their web sites. Departments looking to integrate databases into their web sites should contact OIS Client Services at help@med.unc.edu or 966-1325.
