Why do I lose my connection in the Berryhill Labs?

Since Berryhill re-opened last year, students have reported problems connecting to the School of Medicine network in the Berryhill student labs.  OIS has done extensive testing and troubleshooting of this issue and has determined that the problem is related to moving the laptop between VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) while in the sleep or hibernate mode.  Berryhill, MBRB, Bondurant, Wireless networks, etc, are all in different VLANs.  When connected to the network in one VLAN, the laptop is assigned an address in that VLAN’s address range.  If the laptop is put into the sleep mode (closing the lid), the laptop retains that address.  If it is then moved to a different VLAN, when the laptop awakens open the lid), it tries to connect to the network with the old address that it retained from the previous VLAN.  The new VLAN will not recognize the address and will not allow the laptop to connect.  To connect to the new VLAN, the laptop must be forced to ask for a new address.  The simplest way to do that is to reboot the laptop while connected to the new network.
