About AOE

The UNC-CH School of Medicine Academy of Educators was founded in October 2006 as apart of the School's strategic plan to enhance research and scholarship towards excellence in teaching.

The Mission of the Academy is:

  1. to promote and support excellence in teaching and the work and career paths of excellent teachers
  2. to promote and fund curricular innovation, evidence-based curricular change and a scholarly approach to the education mission; and
  3. to provide a forum for education leadership and advice for the Dean, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Executive Associate Dean for Medical Education and the leadership of the curriculum.

Organizational Structure:

The Academy Co-Directors reprot the the Executive Associate Dean for Medical Education. THey also chair the Academy Executive Committee which is made up of all the academy co-chairs. The Executive Committee drafts policies and plans for Academy activities and initiatives.

The Academy serves as a council to the leadership of the curriculum and does not have direct responsibility for monitoring or administrating the curriculum. The Academy collaborates with existing Dean's Office resources to coordinate their efforts with curriculum priorities and make efficient use of existing expertise.
