Curriculum
AOE Dynamic Work Group: Curriculum Committee September 13, 2011 Plan monthly faculty development sessions including visiting professors, local experts, and community conversations. Members Present: Kevin Biese, Amy Denham, Bob Gwyther, Susan Hadler, Burt Hutto, Debbie Keelean-Fuller, Barry Saunders, Jeffrey Sonis, Beat Steiner
Refined Goals of the Work Group: (More like a list of concepts and ideas) 1. The AOA should expand the focus of its curriculum impact beyond the members of the Academy to include the entire teaching faculty at UNC. Clearly, we will not be able to attract the entire faculty to any one event, but sessions should be available to a broad array of interested faculty. And, the AOE should attempt to assess the faculty’s educational needs and address them with the curriculum. 2. The AOE should survey the faculty to determine what topics and formats they believe would be of value. 3. Some of the groups to include would be: a. New faculty b. Residency directors c. The standing Curriculum Committees (e.g. CC1, CC2, CC3/4, etc.) 4. We can establish the school/faculty’s perceived deficits let groups get rolling on their interests/topics 5. Topics should be selected for: a. Meeting local needs b. Addressing local stresses that mandate educational interventions c. Process to help with our institution’s faculty development 6. Some areas of inquiry and need are: a. Assessment of students and educational interventions b. Population health, especially because we have added it to the list of competencies we intend to address at UNC c. The Curriculum Committee can: 1. Determine topics/format for presentation 2. Recommend external experts to bring to UNC as consultants 3. Become the “backbone” of the curriculum structure for the AOE d. Formats for educational activities can include: 1. Visiting lectureships that address audiences over several days (e.g. Cruess visit) 2. 1-hour local and national expert presentations
Action Items with Dates and Responsible Individuals: 1. Jeff Sonis will put together a survey of SOM faculty to determine: a. Topics they would like to see presented on educational issues b. Formats they would like to see taught and/or demonstrated 2. Bob Gwyther will ask Brad Gaynes and Susan Girdler if they would present the Dep’t of Psychiatry’s program, which they have developed for mentoring and developing their faculty 3. Barry Saunders will work to develop the “reflective writing” component that was presented by Drs. Steiner and Byerley 4. Debbie Keelean-Fuller will develop a list of educational formats that we have used and can consider developing further
Plan for Next Meeting: 1. To circulate to committee members the list of fall semester topics presented by Drs. Steiner and Byerley. 2. Plan a 5:30 PM meeting of the Curriculum Committee prior to the next meeting of the AOE to review the progress/results of the 4 action items listed above and try to make some progress.
