Donald L. Budenz, UNC Eye Kittner Family Distinguished Professor and Chairman, was recently recognized by the Glaucoma Research Foundation with a 2015 Shaffer Grant for Innovative Glaucoma Research for his project entitled Incidence of Glaucoma and Glaucoma Progression in an Urban West African Population.

Dr. Budenz will be studying the incidence of glaucoma and glaucoma progression in Ghana, West Africa. “This will be the first study of this nature performed in Africa and will provide valuable information about the impact of this devastating disease,” he said.

“The Glaucoma Research Foundation typically supports basic research studies in glaucoma, but the importance of this epidemiologic work is so great that the agency selected this study for funding.”

This project is a follow-up to a study that Dr. Budenz performed in 2006 – 2008.
