Hello! The 43rd Annual Raney Visiting Professorship will be held April 11-12, 2014. We encourage those of you who have not been able to attend in the past to put forth a concerted effort to do so this year, to see old friends and colleagues. We ask those of you that have attended regularly to contact fellow alumni that were in your class and make plans to reconnect this year. We hope you will be able to attend all events, arriving at least in time for the research presentations on Friday. Let’s make our 43rd Raney Professorship special! Please let us know if you can come by filling out this on-line form, or contacting Cheryl Cooper via email or phone (919.966.9072).
UNC Orthopaedics is in a time of change. We are in the process of planning a true multi-discipline Musculoskeletal Institute, re-making the conference room, building a surgical skills lab and switching over to Epic as our EMR (I know many of you have already felt that pain). We will be counting on all of our faithful alumni to assure the quality and comradeship that has been our tradition, as we build for the future.
Raney Visiting Professor
We are pleased to welcome Charles Saltzman, LS Peery Presidential Endowed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. He is a world renowned foot and ankle surgeon who has published widely in that discipline, as well as on the subject of outcomes in medicine.

The Raney academic schedule consists of a full-day academic session on Friday, as well as an educational session on Saturday morning, culminating in the annual Raney lecture. Though Friday morning and afternoon sessions are centered around the residents and the visiting professor, all are welcome and encouraged to attend the resident research presentations and Dr. Saltzman’s lecture on Friday afternoon. Saturday’s academic agenda will include case presentations, as well as talks given by faculty here at UNC that I am sure you will find interesting. The topics and agenda will accompany this letter. In response to alumni input (and my own need to not spend extended time on a Saturday in a darkened room), the Saturday afternoon leading up to the alumni dinner will be open time that will allow for a bit more interaction with the Chapel Hill you remember from your residency. We will help people with tee times, for the golfers among you (please contact Cheryl Cooper in advance so that we can make sure times are available), and can assist in logistics for those who are interested in activities such as tennis, biking or shopping.
The social agenda will include a cookout for alumni, residents, faculty and their families at the Faculty and Staff Recreation Area (aka “The Farm”) Friday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. This is always a popular gathering that enables you to catch up with the faculty and your fellow alumni in an informal setting, while also getting to know our future alums. Saturday evening will be our annual black tie optional dinner at the The Governor’s Club. A more detailed schedule of this year’s events is here.
Payment of $125 per adult includes the evening activities, and must be received by April 4, 2014. Please mail your check to Cheryl Cooper, UNC Orthopaedics, 3147 Bioinformatics Building, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7055.
