The UNC Supportive Care Program is now enrolling patients into its very first investigator-initiated interventional trial, the Novel Oncology Study of Anti-Depressants (NOSAD). The purpose of this research study is to determine whether antidepressant medications are helpful for the treatment of depression in adult patients who have cancer. This randomized controlled clinical trial is comparing two FDA approved antidepressants, citalopram and mirtazapine, with placebo. The treatment will be chosen based on the patient’s associated symptoms. All patients will receive regular psycho-social support and will be followed closely for the duration of the 9 week study. The study will evaluate the impact of antidepressants on patients’ symptoms of depression, sleep, fatigue, and overall quality of life.
