Electrostatic Discharge - There is a known problem noted on Palm's web site about ESD (electrostatic discharge) and USB:

Here is what it doesn't tell you. The folks at Palm disclosed that the ESD problem with the USB cradles is still occurring with the "E" or "H" cradles. The ESD is killing the USB communications chip within the Palm device. They say the serial cradle/cable does not have this problem. I verified that the serial communications still work (so does IR). If your Palm m5XX stops sync'ing, call Palm (toll call - 847-262-7256). They will send you a replacement Palm, after you hard reset the Palm (that does not fix it). This may only be a temporary fix. Try requesting a serial cradle and they will tell you to purchase one. If you are persistent (get your reference number and call Corporate Escalation - 1-847-493-7256), they may send one, along with an airway bill to return your USB cradle.
