Research Projects:

Mark Henin, 2015-2018. The effects of human anti-CD4/anti-CD8 antibody treatment to examine if they induce similar suppression of T cell activation via downregulation of inflammatory cytokines, ultimately resulting in migration from inflammatory tissue.

Bradly Thrasher. Immune Response to Vaccination in Turner Syndrome.  Over the course of 24 months, Dr. Thrasher recruited patients and completed data analysis evaluating the immune response to HPV vaccine in TS patients.  He received the 2015 Walter Tunnessen Award for Best Clinical Science Research after presenting his work at the University of  North Carolina Evening of Scholarship Meeting.   His work was also selected as a top ranking abstract at the 2016 Pediatric Endocrine Society Annual Meeting for which he was awarded a Presidential Poster Session.  His manuscript is attached.

Quality Improvement

Beth Sandberg. Quality Improvement initiative with an aim to implement and refine an outpatient diabetes education curriculum for patients with newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes, to promote self-management and reduce the psychological/emotional impact of  new chronic illness diagnosis. 

Beth Sandberg. Quality Improvement initiative with an aim to implement and refine a curriculum for the care of children with gender dysphoria for the pediatric residents at UNC, to promote comfort with and competence in evaluation, diagnosis, and referral.

Bradly Thrasher. Improving thyroid screening for newborns born to mothers with Graves disease.  Dr. Thrasher was a leader of a multidisciplinary team that created a protocol standardizing care of newborns born to mothers with Graves disease. 

Janel Hunter. The Medical Neighborhood as a Means for Delivering Triple Aim Care in Children with Uncontrolled Diabetes. Dr. Hunter completed the 9-month data analysis and received the 2015 Jerry Fernald Award for Best Quality Improvement Research after presenting her work at the University of North Carolina Evening of Scholarship Meeting. The 12 month data for the project was presented at the 2016 Pediatric Academic Societies meeting and a manuscript is currently in preparation.
