Hospital Pediatrics Section

The Hospital Pediatrics section of the division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, School of Medicine, UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Hospital Pediatrics Section within GPAM cares for children hospitalized at North Carolina Children’s Hospital.  Our group is composed of faculty physicians, NP/PAs, nurses and other professionals who all strive to ensure high quality, efficient, safe care is delivered to hospitalized children.

Our faculty provide direct patient care with and without residents as well as co-management and consultative services for children hospitalized at NC Children’s. We also provide in-house night coverage for patients in the Newborn Nursery and BMT service. Our faculty also fulfill a unique and important role for the healthcare system as Pediatric Admissions Coordinator (PAC).  The PAC coordinates all pediatric medical admissions to the children’s hospital which has improved flow for the system, patients and referring providers.

Our faculty are key educators for pediatric and Medicine-Pediatric trainees as well as for medical students.  They have a variety of interests and expertise from medical education to high value care to quality and process improvement and have contributed significantly to these areas on local and national levels. The cooperative and collegial environment is supportive not just to delivering great patient care but also to being academically productive. Integration within the GPAM division is an asset for the Hospital Pediatrics section as it allows for an integrated approach to patient care and studies of that care across the continuum of the healthcare system rather than isolated to just in the hospital. Close connections with Outpatient Pediatrics, Newborn Medicine and Child Maltreatment allow us to all learn from each other and optimize the system to promote the best outcomes possible for our patients.

Research interests of the group include educational scholarship, children with medical complexity, and QI research.
