UNC-Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation recently opened a new facility at 2709 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh. This new clinic, The Center for Rehabilitation Care of Raleigh (CRCR) is co-located with Atlantic Prosthetics and Orthotics and combines the expertise of physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians) and prosthetists/orthotists to bring high quality outpatient rehabilitative care to Wake County. The clinic is adjacent to the existing Rex Outpatient Rehabilitation of Raleigh’s physical, occupational, and speech therapy operation located on the same floor of the building.

“We are excited to bring UNC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation together with Atlantic Prosthetics and Orthotics in the new Center for Rehabilitation Care of Raleigh,” says Stephen K. Harper, MS, CPO, managing partner of Atlantic Prosthetics & Orthotics and Director of UNC Health Care’s Prosthetics and Orthotics Department.

“Our facility provides integrated care from physiatrists, therapists, prosthetics and orthotics – the continuum of rehabilitation care -- under one roof,” says Michael Y. Lee, MD, MHA, chair of UNC Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Medical Director of UNC Health Care Rehabilitation Center and UNC Hospitals Rehabilitation Therapies.

The UNC PM&R outpatient clinic will be part of an integration of rehabilitation services in Raleigh and Apex, which include sub-acute as well as long-term rehabilitation care.

“The new facility in Raleigh will offer comprehensive and interdisciplinary care for patients with amputations, stroke, musculoskeletal conditions, and neurological disorders, with a physiatrist on-site each Tuesday,” says Tanya Zinner, MD, Medical Director of Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center of Raleigh and Rex Outpatient Rehabilitation, who added that she anticipates expansion of physiatry services in the future. Additionally, prosthetic and orthotic services will be available Monday through Friday, providing one-stop accessibility.

William Filer, MD, brings his expertise in amputee care and the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. “As a physiatrist, I enjoy seeing people walk again after losing a limb and helping them regain functional abilities so they can return to the activities they enjoy,” Filer says.

“For amputee care, patients meet both the prosthetist and the physician at the same time,” Filer adds. “This allows for the team to appropriately and carefully consider the best treatments and prosthetic equipment, resulting in improved patient comfort, convenience and function.”

Dr. Filer also has a personal interest and experience in treating injuries of dancers and musicians. He is a guitarist and pianist and serves as the physician on call for Carolina Performing Arts.
