Who We AreWelcome to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our mission is to optimize health and function of individuals with disabilities through a patient-centered continuum of care, with the goal of improving quality of life. Our Team ApproachOur rehabilitation doctors, also called physiatrists, manage care through an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team of colleagues from UNC Health Care and other departments. For example, our physiatrists regularly prescribe physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy, and monitor that therapy over time. They attend care conferences with nurses, social workers, care managers, therapists and other specialists to let the patient and family ask questions and make important decisions. The UNC AdvantageOur patients benefit from the wider interdisciplinary team, and also from immediate access to the university's full range of medical resources. Rehabilitation Center Helps Patient Injured in Bus CrashFour people were killed and 50 injured in a tour bus crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia on May 31. One of those injured in the crash, Geeta Chhetri, received spinal cord injury rehabilitation at UNC Heath Care with Heather Walker, MD, and the Rehabilitation Center interdisciplinary team. Wake County Clinical Outreach Improves Continuum of CareAs part of a partnership between UNC and Rex, Tanya Zinner, MD, and Paul Thananopavarn, MD, provide patient evaluation, monitoring, and follow-up in Wake County. Thanks to home-like features, patients feel comfortable while at the same time they receive an array of rehabilitation services.
