Physiology is an interdisciplinary science focusing on mechanisms of function; the fields of cell biology, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal and respiratory physiology, neurobiology, cellular signal transduction and endocrinology are all represented in ongoing departmental research programs. This breadth of research interests allows the department to offer students a unique exposure to physiology and modern experimental techniques at the molecular, cellular and systems levels. Active interaction among research groups and with other basic sciences departments at the University, as well as collaboration with scientists at nearby Duke University and the Research Triangle Park are encouraged.
In addition to the full-time faculty, the Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology includes more than 50 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Four or five new graduate students enter the program each year. |
