Nurses
| Misti Hanks, RN, BSN, OCNMisti attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated cum laude from The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She began her nursing career at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center as a labor and delivery nurse. She then moved on to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where she cared for patients with melanoma for seven years and eventually was promoted to Nurse Manager of the Melanoma and Skin Center. In the Spring of 2006, Misti was a finalist for The MD Anderson Cancer Center Nursing Excellence in Leadership Award. Her husband’s career brought her to North Carolina in June of 2006 when she joined the UNC Division of Plastic Surgery. Misti is an Oncology Certified Nurse and continues her care of cancer patients as they undergo reconstruction. Misti is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery Nurses. Other interests include patient education and process improvement. |
![]() | Rachel HellerRachel graduated cum laude from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing in 1997. She also has a BA in History and Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania (1984) and a previous career in the field of urban renewal and public administration. The death of a friend with AIDS in the late 1980's spurred her to make a career change to nursing. Rachel began her nursing career at Duke University on a surgical floor, caring for plastic surgery and urology patients. She has also worked in family practice and outpatient surgical settings. In 2006 , Rachel came to UNC Hospitals to work for the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, and in July 2009 she joined the Division of Plastic Surgery. Rachel works primarily with pediatric surgery patients, specializing in the care of children born with cleft lip and palate. She is certified in ACLS and PALS and is a certified volunteer Nursing Mothers counselor. She takes a special interest in patient and family education.

![]() | Ann Collins, PA-CAnn Collins graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University with a bachelor of arts in sociology. Before going to graduate school, she volunteered at two area hospitals and worked as a nursing assistant in a children’s hospital. While there, she received three awards from coworkers and one from a family for her excellent work ethic and patient care. She received her physician assistant degree from Wake Forest University Medical School, where she was chair of the community service committee and completed a master’s project on communication with Hispanic patients. As a physician assistant at UNC, she assists the plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the operating room as well as completing preoperative assessments and inpatient care. Her areas of interest include patient satisfaction and communication in patient-provider relationships. Outside of work, she enjoys running with her dog, cycling, and volunteering at the women’s homeless shelter clinic. |
