The University of North Carolina Hospitals

UNC Hospitals, part of the UNC Health Care System, are state supported facilities that provide the highest quality of health care to the people of North Carolina, and support the education of professionals in the health sciences. One of the largest teaching and referral centers in the southeast, it is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina and serves as the principal training site for students in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health.

Chapel Hill is a modest sized town of 40,000 people that swells to an additional 24,000 during the academic year. Adjacent to Durham and Duke University and less than 30 miles from Raleigh, the state capital and home of North Carolina State University, the area is known as the Research Triangle. The Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU) is at the center of the Triangle. Because the area is able to support a wide variety of cultural and athletic events without the congestion of a metropolitan environment, the Research Triangle area is consistently named one of the best places to live in the United States.

UNC Hospitals is comprised of four distinct and separate facilities: North Carolina Memorial Hospital, North Carolina Children’s Hospital, North Carolina Women’s Hospital, and North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital. The North Carolina Cancer Hospital has become a reality with state approriations of $180 million. Building will commence by 2006.The Hospitals serve patients from all 100 North Carolina counties as well as the Southeastern Region of the United States. The far-reaching patient population served by the facilities assures that the medical complex remains at near capacity and the 800 member medical and dental staff remains busy. UNC Hospitals support residencies in Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, General Practice Dentistry, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oral Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Surgery, and all urologic subspecialties.
