Our surgeons are part of a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers from over 16 different specialties. Each of our craniofacial plastic surgeons has completed a fellowship in craniofacial surgery, and each specializes in the surgical treatment of craniofacial problems with a particular emphasis on craniofacial problems in children.
Dr. John Van Aalst is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Pediatric and Craniofacial Plastic Surgery at UNC. He trained in General Surgery at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He then went on to complete Plastic Surgery training and a Craniofacial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at Indiana University. Dr. Van Aalst specializes in the diagnosis and management of craniofacial surgical problems, cleft lip and palate, hemangiomas and vascular malformations, and pediatric facial trauma. His academic research focuses on clinical outcomes in craniofacial and cleft surgeries and tissue engineering with nanotechnology and stem cells.
