All IBMS students receive a fellowship that requires no service other than degree-related academic activities. This stipend is adjusted annually to keep up with the cost of living and is competitive with stipends offered by other institutions. The 2006 stipend is $23,000 plus tuition, fees and health insurance. After the first year of the program, students are supported by assistantships from the laboratories in which they do their dissertation research.  Fellowships, tuition support and health insurance are provided to all UNC doctoral students throughout their education.

IBMS students have competed successfully for national predoctoral fellowships from The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, The National Science Foundation, and The Ford Foundation.  The Graduate School sponsors a series of workshops on preparing the application and UNC faculty will help you to apply during your first year in the Program.  In addition, The Graduate School at UNC also awards one or three-year named fellowships to qualified applicants.
