Saed Abokor - Fayetteville State University
Martha Burch - Knox College
2005 Jeffrey Brodin - College of Saint Scholastica "I really enjoyed the SURE program in both the work and the people I met. My mentor treated me as part of the lab and I felt as though I accomplished a lot in 10 weeks. Most importantly to me, I realized that graduate school is really what I want to do after college. I feel really prepared both as an applicant and for the lab work in grad school. In addition to being a part of a great lab for 10 weeks, the friends I met down in Chapel Hill are ones that I still keep in touch with months later. It was awesome to explore Chapel Hill with people from all over the country. I've already been back to visit my lab and have made plans to see the friends I've made. I might even be back to UNC for grad school! I applied to a bunch of summer programs, but I have no regrets about choosing to go to UNC. It was a great experience with great people."-- Erika Paden, 2003 SURE Program "I couldn't imagine a better way to spend this summer - with colleagues that share the same enthusiasm for science and with a lab that I have at times considered my second family, in a town ideal for a learning, and finally with an absolutely outstanding program staff that made all this possible. I remember the experience like it was yesterday. From spending all-nighters with my peers at GRAW to exploring Chapel Hill on the weekends to extensively evaluating published papers, I can only wish that I could have this same opportunity once more." - Peter Cao, 2006 SURE Program
"In activities from journal clubs to mock interviews to graduate school workshops, we received direction and instruction in all the important areas of being a young scientist. These inculde advice on how to deal with the highs and lows of graduate school and research in general, what to look forward to upon finishing a graduate program, and how to understand the difference between great science, good science, and bad science. In our journal clubs we got a chance to observe some of these issues first hand. For example, we critiqued many papers and could examine mistakes, make suggestions and even think of experiments to solve unanswered questions. But most importantly, I learned how fun and challenging it can be to conduct research on a personal level with my in-lab experiences, triumphs and failures.."--- Ejiofor Ezekwe, 2007 SURE Program |
