Dr. Gilmore is the Thad and Alice Eure Distinguished Professor and vice chair for Research and Scientific Affairs in the Department of Psychiatry at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Gilmore started the Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program (STEP) in 1992. He is director of the UNC Schizophrenia Research Center and serves as principal investigator of several grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He is medical director of the UNC STEP Community Clinic -Wake in Wake County.

He is also a past president of the North Carolina Psychiatric Association.

Thava Mahadevan, MS

Mr. Mahadevan is director of operations at the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health and clinical instructor in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. He is the founder and former executive director of XDS, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive care and services to individuals with persistent mental illness and co-occurring additive and intellectual disabilities, which merged with the Center in 2011. With more than 20 years of experience working in mental health organizations that serve individuals with severe mental illness, Mahadevan has extensive knowledge in designing and implementing innovative treatment programs. He has held program management positions at John Umstead Hospital and Orange, Person, Chatham Mental Health Center. Trained in rehabilitation counseling, he received a master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill.

 

 

Carol

Carol J. Vanderzwagg, MD
Medical Director, Community Services

Dr. VanderZwaag is a clinical professor of psychiatry in the UNC Department of Psychiatry and associate medical director for community programs at the UNC Center for Excellence. Her prior positions include serving as the medical director of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit at John Umstead Hospital in Butner, N.C., the Assertive Community Treatment Team psychiatrist for the Cross Disabilities Services program at Orange, Person and Chatham Area Program in Chapel Hill and the medical director of XDS, Inc. a non-profit agency providing community-based mental health services in Orange, Person, Chatham, Durham and Alamance counties. She has extensive experience in in-home and community based care for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and dual disorders (both co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse and co-occurring mental illness and developmental disability). She is a graduate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed her psychiatric residency at New York Hospital-Payne Whitney Clinic before moving to North Carolina to complete a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Duke University.

 

Kelly

Kelly Smedley, RN, MSN, CNS
Clinical Director

Ms. Smedley serves as clinical director of outpatient services at the Carr Mill clinic. She is a board certified clinical nurse specialist in adult psychiatry and mental health.

Her extensive management and clinical experience includes being nursing supervisor of a child/adolescent inpatient psychiatric unit, charge nurse at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC), and a nurse therapist in the early psychosis program at WPIC.

At the UNC Department of Psychiatry, she managed and assisted in the development of the Center of Excellence in the Research and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder, as well as served as a crisis clinician, therapist, and coordinator for several research studies.

She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware and her master’s in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh.

Alice Lockhart, BA
Director of Communications

Ms. Lockhart serves as director of communications and coordinator of the North Carolina Medical Directors' Network Program. She brings more than 20 years of health care marketing and communications experience to the Center. Most recently, she was a marketing communications consultant and was director of marketing and communications in the Department of Ophthalmology in the Duke Medical System. At Duke she directed the marketing communications programs for 10 Duke Eye Center locations in North Carolina and Virginia and was editor of VISION magazine. Lockhart is a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate. She joined the Center in 2011.
