Table of Contents

Originally published in 2003, this manual was made possible by a grant from the Carolina Center for Public Service at the University of North Carolina. It was produced by the UNC Schizophrenia Treatment and Evaluation Program and the Mental Health Association in Orange County as part of a collaborative project to provide education about mental illness to families in rural areas. This is the third edition.

The editor would like to thank the individuals who contributed by writing sections of the manual: John E. Kraus, MD, PhD, Karon Dawkins, MD, Justin Ayre, and Diana Perkins, MD. Also thanks to Jack Haggerty, MD, Rosemary Hutchinson, David Rice, and Scott Stroup, MD for their comments on drafts of the manual.

I would also like to thank the staff at OPC Area Program, NAMI-Orange County, and the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Psychiatry for their support of this project.

And special thanks to my collaborator on this project, Evonne Lack, MSW.
