Summary Statement:

Dr. Hendershot has dual appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, and serves as Director of the Clinical and Translational Addiction Research Program. Dr. Hendershot’s research focuses primarily on the etiology and treatment of substance use disorders. His research integrates behavioral, cognitive and psychopharmacology methods to study risk factors for substance use progression in young populations, and to evaluate candidate behavioral and pharmacological treatments for patients with substance use disorders. Several current projects involve the application of human laboratory methodology (including drug challenge and self-administration procedures) as a translational tool for evaluating candidate pharmacotherapies based on preclinical findings. His clinical interests include motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy and brief interventions for substance use, and he has conducted randomized trials in both clinical and population settings.
