Nutrition Videos

The nutrition videos that you will view are based on the Diabetic Exchange System which was developed in the 1950’s to help individuals with diabetes plan their meals and control their blood glucose. We use this system to help patients create well balanced meals with approximate calorie levels avoiding the rigidity of calorie counting. The word “exchange” refers to the fact that each item on a particular list in the portion listed may be exchanged with any other food item on the same list. An exchange can be explained as a choice or serving. Each list is a group of measured or weighed foods of approximately the same nutritional value. Within each food list, one exchange is approximately equal to another in calories, carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The exchange system allows patients to choose a wide variety of foods and have the appropriate amounts of carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, and fiber in their meal plan everyday.
